An internal combustion engine has double-ended pistons 5 and a combustion chamber at the end of each cylinder. Instead of connecting rods and a crankshaft, the movement of the pistons is recovered by piston motion recovery gears (PMRGs) the outer surfaces of which engage with rack gears which protrude from each side of the pistons 5. The outer surface of each PMRG has a total of 180 degrees of gear teeth, two sections of 90 degrees at 90 degree intervals. The PMRGs turn secondary bevel gears which turn the primary gears 2 and primary gear shafts 1. The engine can operate on a two-stroke or a four-stroke cycle. As each piston reaches top dead centre the toothed sections of PMRGs are parallel, the timing for this being provided by the primary and secondary gears. |
