<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent smoke emission in an abruptly load-increasing state, caused by suppression or interruption of an EGR amount, in an engine such as an engine for driving a pump or dynamo, in which a load increasing state does not appear as an accelerating state of rotating speed. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This engine 10 includes a supercharger 11 and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) device 12. The engine 10 performs isochronous control or droop control. When the actual rotational speed N is detected and a difference between the actual rotational speed N' sampled before one cycle and the latest actual rotational speed N is larger than a first threshold ΔN1 three times in a row, EGR valve throttle control is performed so that the EGR valve 13 of the EGR device 12 is throttled by a predetermined throttle opening ΔF rather than a normal set opening Fxy corresponding to a load state or the EGR valve 13 is fully closed.
