<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming method and an image forming apparatus for detecting a toner degradation state by detecting an image density on an electrostatic latent image carrier or a transfer rate detected therefrom with high sensitivity inexpensively, and processing degraded toner based on the detected information, so that waste toner can be reduced and a good image can be obtained. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming method includes a first detecting step of detecting the image density of an image that is transferred with a predetermined reference electric field, and a second detecting step of detecting the image density of an image that is transferred with an electric field that is smaller or greater than the reference electric field.
