<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift control device for improving vehicle braking performance when braking operation is performed in the state that excessive driving torque is applied to driving wheels. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The shift control device (an electronic control device 1) for an automatic transmission includes a shift control executing means for changing over a travel range as the shift range of the automatic transmission 10 into a non-travel range under predetermined conditions. It includes a driving torque condition determining means for determining the condition of driving torque applied to the driving wheels W<SB>RL</SB>, W<SB>RR</SB>, and a braking operation condition determining means for determining whether the braking operation of a driver is performed or not. For the shift control executing means, predetermined conditions are established when the braking operation is performed in the state that excessive driving torque is applied to the driving wheels W<SB>RL</SB>, W<SB>RR</SB>.
