To make it possible to obtain an optimal correspondence relationship between image data and ink supply amount in a printer, giving consideration to response delay that occurs when adjusting the ink supply amount, a plate is attached to the printer drum, an image target color is set for the plate, and an online colorimeter measures the current image color printed by the operating printer, controlling the ink supply so that the current color approaches the target color setting. When printing has gone on for a time equal to or greater than the ink response time constant, and the current color has come within a preset tolerance of the target color, the correspondence relationship between the image data and the ink supply amount at that moment is saved. A plurality of correspondence relationship pairs between image data and ink supply amount are saved, and the optimal correspondence relationship between image data and ink supply amount is automatically set.
