A camera (32) is arranged to map defects in the molten metal bath formed by scarfing using a scarfing torch (34) on a steel slab (37). The camera has a field of vision of a large area (36) of the slab (37) and records the defects as flashes of high intensity light the nature of which identifies the type of defect.
