The present invention refers to the application of Ectodermis of Opuntia, i.e., prickly pear skin, as an absorbent of different liquids which are commonly spilt in laboratories or industries, such as acid aqueous solutions, salts, bases and hydrocarbons, as well as sand for cats. Besides being biodegradable, the inventive sorbent has a sorption ability higher than that of commercial sorbents, also being safe, and compatible with the aforementioned liquids, the final disposal of the sorbent may be by confinement, incineration or thermal destruction.
