The method involves detecting a physical variable (D) e.g. pressure, by a piezoelectric sensor (16) arranged at or in a seat device. A measuring signal (s) reproducing the physical variable by the sensor is produced. Information about the occupancy state is obtained in dependence of the frequency spectrum of the measuring signal in a frequency range, which comprises a frequency range of the human physiological tremors. The information is differentiated between a flexible tube (10) and an article. An independent claim is also included for a device for obtaining an occupancy condition of a seat device of a motor vehicle.
