The transaxle (10) has housing (12) having several zones (A-F) defined by several planetary gear sets (20,22,24,26) and walls (102,104,106) of housing, in specific manner. A clutch (66) and a clutch (68) are arranged in any one of zones (B-D, F) and a clutch (70) is arranged in any one of zones (C-E,F), while arranging the brakes (72,74) in any one of zones (A,B,F). The clutches and brakes are selectively engageable to establish eight forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio between the transmission input and output shafts (14,16).
