摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display device which can decrease the driving voltage and which can display a bright image. SOLUTION: In an IPS liquid crystal display device having a pair of electrodes 12, 13 in the glass substrate 11 side, a vertical alignment film is formed in the substrate 11 side, while a horizontal alignment film is formed in the substrate 21 side. The rubbing direction of the horizontal alignment film is specified to the direction of the electric field produced by the electrodes 12, 13. Or, a horizontal alignment film may be formed in the substrate 11 side and the vertical alignment film may be formed in the substrate 21 side. In this method, the ratio d/p of the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer to the natural twist pitch (chiral pitch) p of the liquid crystal is specified, for example, to 0.35±0.1, and the product Δnd of the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer and the double refraction Δn of the liquid crystal is specified, for example, to 0.7±0.2.
