PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for modulation of surface plasmon wave is provided to modulate a phase and amplitude of the surface plasmon wave. CONSTITUTION: The dielectric(200) is away from the surface of the metal(100) with the air gap. The dielectric modulates the surface plasmon wave. The surface plasmon wave moves according to the metal surface and is generated on the boundary face with the surface of a metal. The effective refractive index of the surface plasmon wave which passes a dielectric is changed corresponds to the air gap. The dielectric is located in the domain corresponds to a metal and a dielectric. The phase and amplitude of the surface plasmon wave are modulated correspond to the length of the air gap and area from the metal surface.
