The invention relates to a method for producing biogas in a fermentation reactor. The method comprises the steps of determining at least one first target value range associated with a first characteristic parameter of the fermentation, wherein the first target value range defines a first value range suitable for maintaining the fermentation; determining at least one second target value range associated with a second characteristic parameter of the fermentation, wherein the second target value range defines a second value range suitable for maintaining the fermentation; determining at least one measurement value of the first characteristic parameter during the fermentation process; comparing the measured value of the first characteristic parameter to at least one first target value range associated with said first parameter; comparing the measured value of the second characteristic parameter to at least one second target value range associated with said second parameter, and addition of at least one type of micro-organisms to the fermentation substrate if the measured value of the first characteristic parameter has a defined relation to the first target value range associated with said first parameters, and if the measured value of the second characteristic parameter has a defined relation to the second target value range associated with said second parameter.
