The engine has a high pressure turbine (26) arranged upstream to a low pressure turbine (22) in an exhaust gas tract (14), and a low pressure compressor (20) arranged downstream to a high pressure compressor (24). A high pressure bypass channel (28) in the tract (14) has a high pressure bypass valve (30) i.e. change-over damper, for bridging the turbine (26). A low pressure bypass channel (32) has a low pressure bypass valve (34) i.e. wastegate, for bridging the turbine (22). A single common regulating unit (36) i.e. pneumatically or solenoid actuated regulating unit, operates both the valves.
