PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position detecting apparatus, a paper thickness detecting apparatus and a belt position detecting apparatus capable of making detection accuracy higher than conventional ones, and an image forming apparatus having at least one of them. SOLUTION: The position detecting apparatus 10 has: a moving member 30 contacting a detection object 200 and moving following the detection object 200; a support member 60 supporting the moving member 30 rotatably; and a photo sensor 40 detecting the position of the moving member 30. The moving member 30 receives the action of a first force F1 for pressing the moving member 30 to the detection object 200, a second force F2 which is a force for pressing the moving member 30 in the direction of a rotation axis 16, and a third force F3 which is a force for pressing the moving member 30 in the direction perpendicular to the rotation axis 16.
