<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cause module-to-module communication, as little as possible, in a storage system composed of modules. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A plurality of modules (1) and (2) include a plurality of virtual volumes 302 which are correlated with the same volume identification number. The module (2), which receives a writing request from a higher-order device 100, retrieves unallocated actual areas from a plurality of actual areas in the module (2) itself but not from a plurality of actual areas in the other module (1) if the actual areas are not yet allocated to writing-object virtual areas which accompanies the writing request. The module (2) allocates the retrieved actual areas in the module (2) itself to the writing-object virtual areas and writes data, which accompanies the writing request, to the actual areas.
