<PICT:0361476/III/1> In the removal of carbon monoxide from combustible gas, by catalysis in two stages with steam and hydrogen respectively, as described in Specification 356,838, the plant comprises a heat exchanger 13 and intermediate and end gas reaction towers 14, 17 respectively. The heated gas mixture from a retort or water gas generator 2 passes through the towers successively and means are provided for establishing communication, through the heat exchanger between the towers on the one hand and between the end gas reaction tower and a purifier 11a on the other hand, whereby gases issuing from the reaction towers serve to heat the initial gas. The purifying tower 11a, cooled by brine from the refrigerating plant 3, 5, 6, 7, 24, serves to remove water from the resulting gases before passing to the gas holder. The brine circulation is also used in a supercooler 11 inserted between the generator and the heat exchanger. A waste heat boiler 15, heated by flue gases from the generator or reaction towers serves to raise steam for use in the first of the contact towers and also for use in the refrigerating plant. Metal screens for carrying the catalysts in the towers are heated by an electric system, which maintains them at a temperature of 400-450 DEG C. Sulphur impurities are removed in the reaction tower 14, which prevents poisoning of the catalyst in the tower 17.
|
