<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light source device with light source units free from damage and characteristic deterioration with a dimensional change of a light guide while holding spaces between the light guide of a backlight unit and each of the light source units on the side face thereof constant, and to provide the light guide. <P>SOLUTION: The surface light source device 1 includes the light guide 3, the light source units 4B, 4T opposed to the side face of the light guide 3 for emitting light to the side face of the light guide 3, and holders 5B, 5T for mechanically connecting the light guide 3 and each of the light source units 4B, 4T. The light source unit 4B is movable following the expansion of the light guide 3.
