The invention relates to a method of producing colloidal chalogenide-containing semiconductor nanocrystals in an organic medium, comprising: providing an organic solution of a chalcogenide salt whose cation is a primary, secondary, tertiary or quaternary ammonium cation; and creating and growing the nanocrystals in an organic medium by reacting the chalcogenide salt with at least one metal salt, in the presence of a co-ordinating ligand.
