PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately adjust a cylinder air volume to reliably prevent abnormal combustion during transition in which an intake valve closing timing shifts between quick closure operation and slow closure operation, and to reduce pump loss to increase engine operation efficiency. SOLUTION: This control method has: a regular control step to control the intake valve closing timing depending on an operation mode, assuming quick closure operation mode in an operation region on a predetermined low-load side or slow closure operation mode in an operation region on a predetermined high-load side; and a transition control step to control the transition from quick closure operation mode to slow closure operation mode as a desired cylinder air volume increases. The transition control step is to, when the desired cylinder air volume exceeds a predetermined air volume, retard the intake valve closing timing according to the increase of the desired cylinder air volume and decrease once and then increase an intake pressure, wherein the predetermined air volume is changed according to operating conditions.
