<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system, method and device for illuminating an interferometric modulator display. <P>SOLUTION: For directing light from a light source into an interferometric modulator structure, the system includes a light redirector including a reflective structure, a scattering center, and a fluorescent or phosphorescent material. The structure of a front light plate 200 is optimized so that light 202 emitted from a light source 100 enters the front optical plate 200 and changes in direction toward an interferometric modulating element 310 by an inclined surface 204 of a reflective structure 210. Most of the light 202 changed in direction into the element 310 is reflected by the element 310, and transmitted to the outside through a substrate 300 and the front light plate 200.
