<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backstitch controller for sewing machine which enhances sewing quality while preventing defective stitch and irregular (clogged) pitch caused by defective optimization control due to double setting or unreleased setting by detecting automatically problems with optimization control which sets stitch adjusting values α and β to form an optimal stitch, when both of initial automatic reverse feed control and soft start control are set active before starting sewing. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When both of soft start control and initial automatic backstitch control are set active, it is determined if there is any problem with initial automatic backstitch control when soft start control is implemented, and if a problem is detected, the soft start control is determined not to be implemented and only the initial automatic backstitch control is implemented.
