The process of treating a wood element (1) of a specific species, comprises integrally exposing a side (6) of the element to a laser beam (R). The laser beam has a wavelength (100-500 nm) corresponding to the wood species. The wavelength degrades intrinsic chemical components of the element, which is not stable under the effect of exposition of the element. The wood element is cleaned and then colored before or after exposing the laser beam. The exposure of the laser beam is carried out using a unit (2) comprising laser sources (4) for emitting laser along its length of the element. An independent claim is included for a wood element of particular species.
