<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of matching the reading characteristics of a front-side reading device and a back-side reading device with each other in calibration and capable of performing the calibration without giving incompatibility that does to a user before and after calibration even in single-sided reading, and to provide its control method and a program. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Pieces of reading frequency information representing the use frequencies of a first reading unit and a second reading unit respectively are acquired. Read color information of a color on a document that is read by the first reading unit or the second reading unit is acquired. Based on the acquired pieces of reading frequency information and the acquired read color information, one of the first reading unit and the second reading unit is decided as a reference reading unit serving as a reference when performing the calibration to make the reading characteristics of the first reading unit and the second reading unit relatively coincide with each other.
