<p>A process for the production of granular metallic iron by subjecting a feed material mixture comprising an iron oxide-containing substance, a carbonaceous reducing agent, and an Li2O-supplying substance to heating and reduction in a heating and reducing furnace, wherein the iron oxide-containing substance contains a hematite-containing substance and the feed material mixture contains at least Fe, Ca, Mg, Si and Li as constituent elements so that the slag generated during the heating and reduction as a by-product can contain CaO, MgO, SiO2 and Li2O and have an Li2O content of 0.05 mass% or above and a basicity [(CaO+MgO)/SiO2] falling within the range of 1.5 to 1.9. The process makes it possible to produce granular metallic iron with high productivity even when a hematite-containing substance is used as the iron oxide-containing substance.</p> |
