A synthetic roofing clement is provided having laterally spaced-apart placement indicators in a headlap portion thereof, defining a spacing zone between the placement indicators, with the placement indicators comprising a means for providing a visual indication of proper placement of spaced-apart edges of adjacent roofing elements in a next-overlying course of roofing element. The placement indicators can comprise vertical lines, and can include instructions in text. Spacing nibs can also be used. The placement indicators can include markings for placing corners of tabs of next-overlying roofing elements. A roof comprised of such roofing elements and a method of applying such elements are also disclosed.
