<p>Provided are methods for intra-operatively predicting, detecting or diagnosing the risk or onset of spinal cord ischemia and/or associated permanent paralysis in a patient, based upon the stress-induced elevation of levels of heat shock proteins, specifically HSP70 and/or HSP27 in the cerebral spinal fluid of the patient, as measured during thoracic-aorta surgery, particularly thoracic aneurysm repair surgery, that will permit intra-operative medical intervention to try to prevent or attenuate severe, and often fatal, complications. Further provided are kits, assay devices and methods of analyzing biomarker data for use in pre-, intra- or post-operatively detecting the stress-induced elevations of the measured levels of HSP70 and/or HSP27, and the biomarker itself.</p> |
