<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent injury within a sheath by retaining the position of an optical housing within the sheath of an optical probe device and inhibiting the contact between the housing and the sheath. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The optical probe device obtains an optical tomographic image by using interfering light. The optical probe device comprises the tubular sheath whose distal end side at least is transparent and flexible; an interfering-light outgoing/incoming part disposed in the inner lumen of the sheath; the housing for holding the interfering light outgoing/incoming part; a flexible shaft connected to the housing for transmitting the rotation to the housing by a driving means at the rear end; and position retaining means disposed at the distal end of a member for occluding the distal end of the sheath and at the distal end of the housing for retaining the position of the housing. The position retaining means also serves as a friction preventing means for preventing the friction between the inner surface of the member for occluding the distal end of the sheath and the distal end of the housing when the housing is rotated.
