The device has scrapers (31) arranged in an exhaust gas circulation duct (29) for scraping or striking an inner surface (29a) of the duct under an effect of circulation of exhaust gas in the duct. The scrapers are movably mounted along the interior of the duct, and are movable with a bypass control valve (33). The valve distributes the gas between the circulation duct and an additional duct (35) that is arranged exterior to an exhaust gas recirculation exchanger (7). An independent claim is also included for a method for limiting fouling of an exhaust gas recirculation exchanger.
