SOLUTION: In modifying the hydrogenation characteristics or/and dehydrogenation characteristics of the hydrogen storage material such as AlH3, the newly formed surface of the hydrogen storage material is mechanically milled in an atmosphere containing a gas or liquid or a mixture thereof capable of modifying the newly formed surface of the hydrogen storage material. N2, H2, air or the like can be used as the gas. Since the newly formed surface of the hydrogen storage material is modified with the gas or the like in the above atmosphere while suppressing the discharge of hydrogen and is reformed, the lowering of a hydrogen storage amount caused by reforming is reduced and the hydrogen storage material is uniformly treated as a whole.
