PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter medium for use in cleaning air in a facility wherein particulate contaminants, dust and the like are generated, having high efficiency of catching the same in air and having a prolonged replacement cycle resulting from its enhanced capability of catching them in a greater amount, and a filter employing the filter medium. SOLUTION: The filtration unit 10 that cleans air by catching particulate contaminants, dust, and the like in air includes a filer medium 30 attached to surrounding wall faces 15a to 15d each having a gas permeable wall face member 17. The filter medium 30 includes a first filter medium layer 31 formed of a noninflammable or a flame-retardant fiber or of a woven fabric or a nonwoven fabric having been subjected to a treatment of making it noninflammable or flame-retardant, and a second filter medium layer 32 laid over the surface of the first filter medium layer 31, is characterized in that the first filter medium layer 31 has a thickness of 20.0 mm to 60.0 mm and the second filter medium 32 has a thickness of 5.0 mm to 25.0 mm, with the second filter medium layer 32 made to have a denser structure than the first filter medium layer 31.
