PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a battery protection device and a battery protection method, for protecting a battery system by preventing a current equal to or larger than a rated value from being supplied to the battery. SOLUTION: The battery protection device for a battery system is equipped with a plurality of battery units U1-UN connected in parallel, the battery unit including unit battery rows 21-2N having at least one unit battery BT connected in series, interruption elements 11-1N connected in series to the unit battery columns 21-2N, and detection means 31-3N and 41-4N for detecting the characteristics of the unit battery columns 21-2N. The battery protection device is provided with: input/output terminals for the unit battery columns 21-2N, switch means SW0 and SW1-SWN disposed between the battery protection device and a power supply unit or a load 7, calculating means 5, 6 for calculating the characteristic values obtained from the detection means 31-3N and 41-4N, and a control means CTR for controlling the switch means SW0 and SW1-SWN based on the results of the calculating means 5, 6.
