Provided is a method for manufacturing an organic electroluminescence element by laminating at least a cathode, an anode and an organic light emitting layer positioned between the cathode and the anode on a substrate. The method includes an organic light emitting layer forming step of forming an organic light emitting layer by applying an ink containing an organic light emitting material to the inside of barrier ribs arranged to surround a pixel region wherein pixels are formed when viewed from one direction in the substrate thickness direction; and a surface treatment step of treating the surface of the substrate with an organic solvent from the side where the barrier ribs are arranged, prior to the organic light emitting layer forming step. Thus, the organic light emitting layer can be formed without generating film defects, and the organic electroluminescence element having excellent qualities and a display device including such organic electroluminescence element are provided.
