PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device capable of displaying information, without using a complicated driving circuit or a dense device, and a display element used in the display device. SOLUTION: This display element used in the display device has a cell container filled with a solution-like transparent material containing an inclusion compound or a derivative of the inclusion compound, and a metal layer faced to the transparent material in the container and functioned as a control electrode. The inclusion compound or the derivative of the inclusion compound is coupled with a metal nanoparticle, and a color tone of a metal layer surface is changed by controlling a potential impressed to the control electrode, so as to switch a display content.
