Class 44 In an automobile door lock in which a slam bolt 10 can be withdrawn either by a follower 11 turned by an external handle 12 or by a retractor 20 operable through a link bar 23 by an internal handle 24, the external handle 12 is locked against movement by an abutment member 25 pivoted at 26 on a cheek plate 14 and adapted to co-operate with the follower 11 The member 25 itself is operable by a key 30 from the outside or by the handle 24 and, in the event of it being moved to its locking position when the door is open, the member 25 is disengaged from the follower 11 by an abutment 31 on the bolt 10 when the door is slammed. The bolt 10 and the retractor 20 are guided by a stump 19 on the cheek plate 14, and the retractor 20 has a lost motion connection with a pin 22 on the bolt 10 and is provided with an abutment 27 so that on movement of the handle 24 from the shown neutral position, Fig. 1, to one of the two positions shown chain-dotted, the retractor 20 either withdraws the bolt 10 or else moves the abutment member 25 into the locked position whereby an abutment 32 on the latter member confronts the abutment 31 on the bolt 10. The member 25 is bifurcated to straddle a lever arm 28 carried by a barrel lock 29 which is operated by the key 30 to rock the member 25 into and out of engagement with the follower 11. The handle 24 is spring-biased to the neutral position, and the member 25 is provided with pips 25X for frictionally engaging the cheek plate 14 to assist retention of the member 25 in the adjusted positions by an over-centre spring (not shown). In another embodi- ,ment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the handle 24 ds spring-biased to the neutral position from the unlocked position only and the retractor 20, instead of operating the abutment member 25 directly, operates it through an intermediate member which it trips across a dead centre position, the link bar 23 being provided with a catch for retaining a sliding window in a closed position. |
