<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for obtaining high luminous efficiency in a side-edge type backlight device with an incident end face of a light guide plate thinner than a light irradiation face of a light source. <P>SOLUTION: An auxiliary light guide plate of the side-edge type backlight device includes: a light source; a light guide plate making light from the light source incident from a light-incident end face; an optical film arranged at a surface side of the light guide plate; and a reflecting plate arranged at a rear-face side of the light guide plate, wherein the light-irradiating end face of the light source is thicker than the light-incident face of the light guide plate. An auxiliary light guide plate is integrally provided at a light guide plate side of the reflecting plate for receiving and guiding light from the light source, and at the same time, has a reflecting element formed facing the light guide plate side, and the auxiliary light guide plate is arranged in parallel at a rear-face side of the light guide plate and structures together a light-incident end face.
