<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for safely and efficiently producing phosphor which shows emission of high-intensity light and substantially avoids degradation during use. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method for producing nitride or oxynitride phosphor includes heating a starting material comprising an alloy comprising two or more metal elements constituting a phosphor under coexistence of zinc oxide in a nitrogen element-containing atmosphere. According to the production method, a phosphor which shows emission of high-intensity light and substantially avoids degradation during use, particularly a nitride or oxynitride phosphor having low oxygen concentration can be efficiently produced.
