A honeycomb structure that at regeneration treatment, etc., inhibits the occurrence of a temperature distribution between a central region and a peripheral region, inhibiting the occurrence of particulate burn residue. The honeycomb structure is composed of multiple columnar honeycomb fired bodies bound together. The honeycomb structure has the following characteristics. Each of the honeycomb fired bodies consists of a peripheral honeycomb fired body located in a peripheral area and a central honeycomb fired body located in a central area in the cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the honeycomb structure. The sectional configuration of the central honeycomb fired body is quadrangular, and the sectional area of the central honeycomb fired body is in the range of 900 to 2500 mm2. The sectional configuration of the peripheral honeycomb fired body is different from that of the central honeycomb fired body, and the sectional area of the peripheral honeycomb fired body is in the range of 0.9 to 1.3 times that of the central honeycomb fired body.
