The controller (SG) has a battery controller for controlling loading of a vehicle battery (Batt) in a housing, and an interface for providing a sensor signal of an accident sensor system (DCU). An evaluation circuit evaluates the sensor signal for producing a control signal. A control circuit controls a person protection unit (PS) depending on the control signal, where the battery controller provides the energy for operating the controller over a supply component. The supply component is directly connected with a battery voltage. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a controller for controlling a personal protection unit.
