<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize medium intake speed according to properties such as force or operation speed of a customer to prevent bending of a medium and to prevent slant insertion, in an automatic transaction device handling the medium such as a bankbook. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In this automatic transaction device 1 having a bankbook entry part 12 entering a transaction history or the like in the bankbook 31, detecting approach of the customer by a detection sensor, and starting a transaction, a time until detecting insertion of the bankbook 31 after detecting the approach of the customer is measured, and the bankbook intake speed is changed based on the measured time.
