For producing coating paper for cigarettes with perforations i.e. holes, a double-width web (10) is perforated by a laser beam (21) while forming separate groups of holes. A single laser beam is used for perforating and is diverted by directing mirrors (35, 36) and by tilted mirrors (37, 38) whereby producing, at approximately the same time, two rows of holes, namely transversal rows, oriented transversal to the web (10). This perforation unit can be placed directly on the filter attaching device of a cigarette producing machine.
