The insert (11) has a planar polycrystalline diamond layer (13) including a main cutting element (16) and a contact edge (15) that is located opposite the main cutting element in its layer plane. The main cutting element has two outwardly facing convex cutting sections (17, 27), and a smooth outwardly facing concave transitional region (19) connecting the convex cutting sections. An apex of the transitional region is located on a central line of the main cutting element. The cutting sections of the main cutting element are provided on a single element.
