[Class 38 (v)] [Also in Groups XXV and XXXI] A combined steering-column lock and ignition-switch for a motor car which enables the ignition to be cut out without locking the steering-column comprises a bolt b urged towards its locking position by a spring q<1>, the bolt being movable by a pin d on the end of a cylinder lock f. A cam on the bolt acts through a pin q on an ignition switch g<1> shown in its normal operative position. As the key is turned to allow the spring to shoot the bolt a detent A<1> carried by the bolt encounters the tip r<1> of the key and prevents the bolt from entering the steering column until the key is removed. Upon reinserting the key the detent A<1> is depressed against a spring. The key cannot be withdrawn from the lock in the position shown but in the " bolt-shot " position, and in an intermediate position in which the switch is open but the bolt is not engaged with the column, the key can be withdrawn. A charging lamp working in conjunction with the switch is visible through a passage j<1>.
