摘要 An electric motor is disclosed which includes a stator, a salient pole rotor, and a control means. The stator has at least two stator windings arranged to form stator phases. The salient pole rotor located within the stator is separated from the stator by an air gap, the rotor being shaped and configured to define a higher and a lower magnetic reluctance path through the gap between the rotor and stator. The rotor further includes a field winding about the salient poles of the rotor, which field winding being configured to form a pole pair, and the field winding terminates in a selective electrical switch which determines the electrical continuity of the field winding so that a reverse voltage bias imposed across the switch results in the field winding being open circuit. The control circuit is configured to regulate the magnetizing of the field winding, and the control means is configured to regulate the production of torque in the motor by applying a voltage to another stator phase not responsible for energizing the field winding, at that moment in time, so that, at any given moment, one stator phase is usable for magnetizing the field winding whilst another phase or phases is/are responsible for torque production. In rotation, all stator phases alternate in the function of producing torque and regulating the magnetization of the rotor field winding.
