PURPOSE: An encoding/decoding apparatus using bandwidth extension in a portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to remove information showing a characteristic of an upper bandwidth signal of a signal to be encoded and encode it, thereby obtaining improved encoding performance. CONSTITUTION: An encoding/decoding apparatus using bandwidth extension comprises the following steps. Upper bandwidth information is obtained from an upper bandwidth signal and a lower bandwidth signal(305). The second upper bandwidth information is subtracted from the first upper bandwidth information to produce residual upper band information. The residual upper band information is encoded.
