The method involves moving a strip inserter (22) horizontal to a side of a sheet stack (9) and inserting a marking strip (28) at a preset time point during outputting of sheets (10) from a sheet printing machine (1) and stacking the sheets on top of each other. The stacking side is selected depending on the alignment of the sheets in a rolling direction, a feeding direction and transverse to the rolling direction, where the feeding direction includes the sheets during supply to a punching machine (2). An independent claim is also included for a device for inserting a marking strip into a sheet stack comprising an actuator for horizontal positioning of the device.
