Disclosed is a polymer electrolyte membrane characterized in that the cycle length (L) in a direction of a membrane surface defined by formula (1) and as measured with a small-angle X-ray diffraction analyzer is less than 52.0 nm. L = ?1/(2sin(2?i/2)) (1) wherein 2?i represents a scattering angle in a direction of the membrane surface; and ?1 represents the wavelength of X-ray when the scattering angle in the direction of the membrane surface is measured.
