The controller has a special operating routine for moving a transmission control device to a desired mode by combined and/or sequential repeated manipulation of keys at different time duration. The routine allows inputting of parameters and/or programming information at the respective mode, configures control measures and/or switches programs of the device. The routine is activatable only by input of password or pin by the keys. An external lamp or LED in individual controller keys provides an optical flashing display for obtaining a feedback that reveals whether the desired mode is reached. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a transmission control device.
