摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid optical element having high response speed and being capable of stably controlling the intensity of transmitted light while having a simple configuration. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid optical element 10 includes: a lower substrate 11 and an upper substrate 18, both arranged so as to face each other; a lower electrode 12 selectively arranged on the lower substrate 11; the hydrophobic insulating film 13 covering the lower substrate 11 and the lower electrode 12; a barrier rib 14 provided to demarcate the cell region Z, the barrier rib being arranged upright on the hydrophobic insulating film 13; an upper electrode 17 formed on the upper substrate 18; and a nonpolar liquid 15 and a polar liquid 16, both filled in a space between the hydrophobic insulating film 13 and the upper electrode 17. The lower electrode 12 has an aperture 12K arranged in a region corresponding to part of a cell region Z. When voltage is applied between the lower electrode 12 and the upper electrode 17, an electric charge is stored only in a region corresponding to the lower electrode 12 in a surface of the hydrophobic insulating film 13.
