Interference pigment with a reflectance that is no more than 20% of the reflectance of a keratinic material over an at least 200 nm wide portion of the visible spectrum comprises multilayer particles with at least one layer completely covering an underlying layer. Independent claims are also included for: (1) composition comprising at least one pigment as above in a physiologically acceptable medium; (2) production of an interference pigment by defining a reference reflectance corresponding at least in part to the reflectance of a keratinic material and creating a multilayer structure such that at least one layer completely covers an underlying layer and the reflectance of the pigment is no more than 20% of the reference reflectance over an at least 200 nm wide portion of the visible spectrum.
