<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of homogeneously synthesizing new cellulose ether. <P>SOLUTION: A process of producing cellulose ether comprises the steps of dissolving cellulose in a solution containing an ionic liquid, adding at least one etherification agent into the solution in the absence of inorganic base to form cellulose ether, adding the reaction mixture to a nonsolvent for the cellulose ether obtained by the etherification reaction, thereby precipitating the cellulose ether, separating the cellulose ether, and purifying the cellulose ether.
